Vibration Isolators installation on Cooling Towers

Vibration isolators play a huge role in safeguarding the HVAC equipment and its connected structures from damages due to undesirable vibrations, and cooling towers are no different.

However, not all cooling towers are designed to support the point loading of the vibration isolators.

There are a few things you must keep in mind when fitting vibration isolators on cooling towers.

3 Tips to install Vibration Isolators on Cooling Towers

  • Single-cell Cooling Towers: Most single-cell cooling towers are connected to external loads across multiple load points. To protect the building structure connected to such cooling towers, one must install seismic restrained spring mounts at each load point. These spring mounts dampen the vibrations produced in the cooling towers and restrict them from being transmitted to building structures. One must ensure that the centre line of the vibration isolators are aligned with the centre line of the cooling tower basin and the upper portion of the isolators are restrained from rotation.

  • Multi-cell Cooling Towers: In a multi-cell cooling tower, each cooling unit is connected to other cooling units through pipes, and the entire cooling tower structure is mounted on a structural steel beam. The vibration isolators should be installed below the supporting steel beam to avoid independent movement of the cooling tower cells from one another. When isolators are directly connected to the cooling towers by fitting on top of the structural steel beams, the cells may deflect and move away from each other creating connection issues across inlet piping, outlet piping, equalizer piping, etc.

  • Isolating pipes and other connected structures: In multiple-cell cooling towers, all the pipings that connect the cells should be isolated from the cooling towers through the use of spring isolators. This ensures that pipings are not damaged due to vibrations produced in the cooling towers. Every connection between the cooling towers and the building structure through pipes, ladder extensions, and other attachments should be installed with vibration isolators.
